Birthday Roadrunning

Earlier this month I went roadrunning (where you drive slowly down rural roads at night looking for herps) for my birthday.  We came across a lot of snakes but unfortunately they were all dead on the road (DOR).  We also spotted a few frogs and thankfully all but one was alive and hopping.  Below is a list of what we saw:

Snakes

  • Western Rat Snake (Scotophis obsoletus) – 2
  • Great Plains Rat Snake (Pantherophis emoryi) – 2
  • Blotched Water Snake (Nerodia erythrogaster transversa) – 1
  • Checkered Garter Snake (Thamnophis marcianus maricanus) – 1

Frogs

  • Coastal Plain Toad (Incilius nebulifer) – 2
  • Green Treefrog (Hyla cinerea) – 1
  • Hurter’s Spadefoot (Scaphiopus hurterii) – 1*

*New life list species for me
